Relationship of Computers to Computer Science

2009 June 26

Computer Science is no more about computers than astronomy is about telescopes. – Edsger W. Dijkstra

Many of my friends have asked me to teach them ‘to code’, I usually tell them that its impossible and useless to learn ‘to code‘ in a particular language. Moreover its very simple and easy to code. It is one of the most beneficial factor of being a programmer rather than a designer. To write a code, “You don’t need to think, you just have to be logical” (-Niels Bohr).

Some of my colleagues say that those who can shine in maths can do so in Computer Science. But with the given Indian educational system and method of teaching, I won’t accept that. Understanding of basic maths concepts are far more sufficient to perform well in this field.

Computer Science is not science or art or engineering. It is just a splendid mixture of all three.
