During the First Ecumenical Council of Nicea (AD 325), Arius was called upon to defend his position on the inferiority of Christ. Saint Nicholas just couldn’t listen to all of Arius’ nonsense and so he stood up and laid in to Arius with his fist.

The Emperor Constantine and the bishops present at the Council were alarmed by Nicholas’ act of violence against Arius. They immediately stripped Nicholas of his office as a bishop by confiscating the two items that marked out a man as a Christian bishop: Nicholas’ personal copy of the Gospels and his pallium (the vestment worn by all bishops in the East).

Now if that were the end of the story, we probably wouldn’t know about Saint Nicholas, and our children wouldn’t be asking him for presents. However, after Nicholas was deposed, the Lord Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary visited Nicholas who was being held in a prison cell for his fist-fight with the heretic.

Our Lord Jesus Christ asked Saint Nicholas, “Why are you here?” Nicholas responded, “Because I love you, my Lord and my God.”

Christ then presented Nicholas with his copy of the Gospels. Next, the Blessed Virgin vested Nicholas with his episcopal pallium, thus restoring him to his rank as a bishop.

Not long ago I had Sharjah Milk Shake with my friend opposite to my university. It became my instant favorite. I have no idea how I spent three years there without knowing about this.. I was told the name Sharjahwas a local one. But the info was wrong. It is a famous recipe and a common name. Internet is full of it. Here is the Complete Recipe by Ms. Nagalakshmi. Hope you like it too..

By the way, please don’t use Horlicks as an alternative as recommended in there… It doesn’t taste good at all. Believe me, I tried it.

This is a good book to read once. I would give 2/5 for this book. Among all his books 2 States is still my favorite book.

I do have one minor issue with this book. When New York Times recently pointed out the degrading quality of English in Indian novels, Chetan was quick to criticize them saying that,

And I try to catch authentic dialogue that matches the character. even if that isn’t correct queen’s English. Duh! [sic] (src)

I accepting his logic, I can go on-board with characters ending English sentences with ‘no‘ in an unreasonable manner or other errors inside quotes. But there are some errors which which confused me and made it difficult for me to understand the book. For example:

FlyingAarti: Of course. See, Raghav has ditched me for Chak de India all week. (Pg. 87, last couple of lines)

From the above sentence, if you thought Ragav ditched aarti and went to see the film Chak de India, you are wrong. In-fact he didn’t go to the movie and that was her point.

There are numerous other errors in grammar, tense and sentence patterns, But I am not going to go into that.

In the same twitter conversation about the NYT, Chetan also went on to say that he has four editors who corrects his book. (src) I seriously doubt that.

Mr. Chetan , English Language has grammar for a purpose. Please do follow at-least the basic rules. Trying to focus on the language style in order to bring reality into the characters is good. But when you push it too far, you will miss the point you wanted to make in the first place.

இந்தப்பாடலில் குற்றம் கண்ட புலவர் நக்கீரரை தேடிச்சென்ற சிவன், அவரைப்பார்த்து:

அங்கம் வளர்க்க அரிவாளில் நெய்தடவிப்
பங்கம் படஇரண்டு கால்பரப்பிச்- சங்கதனைக்
கீருகீர் என்று அறுக்கும் கீரனோ என்கவியைப்

பொருள்: தன் உடலை வளர்ப்பதற்கு வாளில் நெய்தடவி இரண்டு கால்களையும் விரித்து அமர்ந்து சங்கை அறுக்கும் கீரனோ என் பாட்டில் குறை சொல்பவன்.

அதற்கு நக்கீரர்:

சங்கறுப்பது எங்கள் குலம் சங்கரர்க்கு அங்கு எது குலம்

பொருள்: சங்கை அறுத்து வாழ்வது எங்கள் குலம்,ஆனால் சிவனுக்கு குலம் ஏது. உள்ள குறையைப் பொருத்தமாகச் சொன்னால் அது தவறாகுமோ? நாங்கள் தொழில் செய்து வாழ்கிறோம் ஆனால் சிவனைப் (உன்னைப்)போல் யாசித்து உண்டு வாழ மாட்டோம்.

எவ்வளவுதான் பொறுப்பது. தமிழைப் பழகிக் கொண்டு, ஒரு மானிடப்பதர் தன்னைப் பார்த்து இப்படி கேட்கலாமா என நெற்றிக் கண்ணைத் திறந்து காண்பித்தார் சிவன். அவர் அதற்கும் அசரவில்லை.

நக்கீரார்:

முற்றும் நீர் கண்ணானாலும்
மொழிந்த நும்பாடல் குற்றம்

இதைக்கேட்ட பின் தான் சிவன் கோபம் கொண்டு நக்கீரனை எறித்தார்.

Recently read Light Of The World : The Pope, The Church and The Signs Of The Times (Ignatius Press ISBN: 9781586176068. My Library: 160)

The newest book by the pope is a series of interviews of the Pope Benedict XVI by Peter Seewald. Everyone knows what the pope teaches, but this books is a must if you want to know why he teaches that. As for me the only reason I bought this book was because it was written by the man who holds the chair of St. Peter. This book is a must for every catholic. It paints a clear picture of the wise and prudent shepherd the church is blessed with. Joseph Ratzinger, shows that he is a professor all thru this book.

Some of this answers were very wise. Resembles his deep theological knowledge. Some of his answers, made me to think for hours together.

For example his explanation for comprehending God and His nature by the human mind, (p. 174-175):

….God does not force himself upon us. Not in the way that I can’t help noticing, say, a glass on the table here, where I have no choice but to say “there it is!” His existence is an encounter that reaches down into man’s inmost depths but that can never be reduced to the tangibility of a merely material thing. …. Faith is always an event that happens in freedom. That event contains certainty …. but never excludes the possibility of Denial

Contradiction: Atheism and Theism which is reasonable?

In this book he talks about serious things like clergy abuse scandal, genuine dialogue with Islam, possibility of rethinking the church’s core teaching and other light thing like what films pope watch, what does he do in his free time, if he has any etc.,

He also clearly tackles the problems the modern world faces, and the influence/role of media in it.

By the way this is the book which was misquoted by the press and the media purposefully, stating that the pope approved the use of condoms under certain circumstances. I have read it, and he didn’t even remotely mean that. Any sensible reader can know that. It was completely taken out of context, if they have done a similar thing to another person or religious leader…. You know what would have happened..

The office of St. Peter is one of the most difficult one. As George Weigel, says in his foreword for this book, the man who wears the ring of the fisher man is in a unique position to comment about happenings in the world, because unlike others, he sees them with a view of love and service and not of profit.

I really miss pre-internet era of my life, when I used to read a lot of books. It is a wonderful feeling to get lost in reading.

Anyway I have finished reading these books for now:

நிறமற்ற வானவில் – சுஜாதா

Read this book when I was traveling to my mom’s native place. A nice book. Sujatha’s vivid description of the feelings of the protagonist, when he looses his entire family was excellent. A nice and suitable end to the story. Protagonist’s journey thru the ups and downs of life might teach us a thing or two. Even though this book talks about surviving  and dealing with the death of our loved ones, I would not personally recommend this to someone who has recently suffered a loss.

Luv U Mate – Punit Sethi

Sorry for being harsh, But it is not a good book. Bought because of all the fuzz made by media that “Google Declared Facebook Expert” nonsense, which still can not be verified.  Even though the book starts good, but goes on to be boring. Unnecessary description of fantasy land experience is a downer. My personal moral perspective, did not keep this book in a good light.

This book was like reading all those fancy copy-paste status updates we find on a average Facebook users wall. I would rather read it on my friends wall than in a book. If the book gives more precise guide line to use Facebook (for older people), It might have at-least be useful in one sense. But it fails to do that too.

The ending was not good either. The back cover of the book states a question, “If a person whom you fall in love on Facebook, suddenly disappears, what options are you left with?” The book, till the end does not answer this question, or gives you a lousy answer, “Nothing Much”. In a line the story can be summarized as, “Hero falls in love with a married women online, but she disappears suddenly, after mourning for few days he marries someone else”

A 2^nd Helping Of Chicken Soup For The Soul – Jack Canfield; Mark Victor Hansen

Chicken Soup For The Soul, has proved its worth once more. A nice collection of heart warming stories/ incidents. Some brought tears to my eyes. A good book that has reenforced within me the power of human love and that of humanity itself.

Chetan Bhagat’s Books

Being deluded by the content and quality of Chetan Bhagat’s 2 States-The Story of My Marriage, I wanted to read all of his books. But to my disappointment they were not as good as I expected them to be. Don’t get me wrong, I still consider ’2 States’ as a classic. But that may be because ’2 States’ was his last book, the author has learned a thing or two from his past experiences in writing these books.

One Night @ The Call Center – Chetan Bhagat

Ok. with this book, I wold like to set something straight:
Mr. Bhagat, You are a fiction writer, Not a fantasy fiction writer.

• No, Rand() is NOT a bug in MS Office, An IIT-ian should know that
• No. Microsoft IS perfect
• And Americans are not that stupid

Apart from these I felt that the initial part of the story was moving too slow than necessary, I just skipped thru all those love gibberish. Which was not my taste. That’s just how I feel.

I completely agree with Times of India review of the book: Time to hang up, Mr Bhagat? (I have nothing more to add)

Five Point Someone – Chetan Bhagat

I saw the film version of this book. Started it with a huge expectation. But was seriously disappointing. Is it me, or does anyone else feel that the film version, 3 Idiots  is far better than the book?

Since I am not a avid fan of cricket, I didn’t get the same feel as Ish thru-out the book. Vidya’s explanation, or rather venting of anger about Maths was epic. The climax, especially the last few chapters were interesting, It was like watching a movie, with whats-gonna-happen-next feeling. The book has a very sad ending. Which I think is necessary to exemplify the actual Hindu-Muslim controversy and brutality of those incidents.

A good read for a Sunday afternoon or a long flight trip.

He is the architect of the universe and the manager of all time.
He always was, He always is and He always will be
unmoved, unchanged, undefeated and never undone.
He was bruised and brought healing,
He was pierced and eased pain,
He was persecuted and brought freedom,
He was dead and brought life,
He is risen and brings power,
He reigns and brings peace.

The world can’t understand him;
the armies can’t defeat him;
schools can’t explain him;
and the leaders can’t ignore him.
Herod couldn’t kill him;
the Pharisees couldn’t confuse him;
the people couldn’t hold him;
Nero couldn’t crush him;
Hitler couldn’t silence him;
the new age can’t replace him;
and Oprah can’t explain him away!

He is life, love, longevity & Lord.
He is goodness, kindness, gentleness and God.
He is holy, righteous, mighty, powerful, pure.
His ways are right, His words eternal, His rules unchanging,
and His mind… is on me.

He is my redeemer.
He is my saviour.
He is my God.
He is my Priest.
He is my Joy.
He is my Comfort.
He is my Lord
and He rules my life.
